Minimally Invasive Dental Care

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

This is an antimicrobial liquid that can address cavities in a non-invasive, fast, affordable, and painless manner.  This treatment is used to both avoid or delay more invasive procedures.  Dr. Jes will discuss how we can expect this treatment to be utilized for your child.

SDF is applied by painting it onto the tooth, sometimes we need to place a piece of floss between the teeth to apply it in the interproximal (flossing) areas of the teeth.

Pros: quick, easy, painless, non-invasive, prevents biofilm (plaque/bacteria) adhesion to the tooth and aids in remineralizing the natural tooth structure.  SDF has been shown to arrest 80% of lesions when applied twice yearly.  This treatment works best for small cavities especially when combined with proper diet and oral hygiene, including daily flossing.

Cons: SDF permanent stains decay black, not an option for deep cavities, it does not guarantee the cavity will stop growing.

Hall Crowns

These are stainless-steel crowns placed on baby molars with minimal to no reduction of the tooth, as well as minimal removal of the cavity.  This type of crown placement functions by providing a biological seal preventing the existing bacteria from accessing food and new bacteria from adhering to the tooth.

This procedure has been highly successful especially for those patients who are very nervous, unable to cooperate for traditional treatment, or wanting to avoid utilizing deep sedation options.  There are specific criteria for their placement that Dr. Jes will discuss with you if your child would benefit from this method of treatment

Fluoride

Teeth are composed of many tiny pieces called molecules that attach to each other. These tiny pieces are constantly breaking apart throughout the day and reforming depending on our diet. Fluoride can be thought of as a “glue” for these pieces by keeping the molecules more tightly bound together and less prone to breaking apart. Topical fluoride treatment is effective in protecting children’s teeth and reducing cavities.

Dental Sealants

Think of a tooth’s top (chewing) surface as mountains with many grooves. When your child eats, food gets caught in those grooves.  Although daily brushing is essential, applying a dental sealant will enhance the ability to keep those hard-to-reach areas clean. A dental sealant flows into the grooves, “sealing” the tooth and reducing the probability of cavities.

Radiographs (X-rays)

Radiographs  (or X-Rays) are an essential part of our diagnostic protocol.  Without them, dental conditions may go undetected. Dental X-Rays detect much more than dental cavities, and they allow the dentist to evaluate growth and development, bone health, pathology, and trauma. At Back Mountain Pediatric Dentistry, we use the latest dental X-ray technology with very minimal exposure.

Restorative Care

At Back Mountain Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Jes uses composite fillings which blend in with your child’s smile.  Several factors influence the performance, durability and longevity of the filling.  These include the amount of tooth structure remaining, where and how the filling is placed, and the chewing load the tooth will bear.

Crowns

Dental crowns are protective caps placed over a child’s tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength when there is extensive tooth decay that cannot be repaired with a filling or teeth that have undergone a pulpotomy and require the protection of the crown for the best long term outcome.

Types of Crowns:

Stainless Steel Crown: these crowns are prefabricated and highly durable, making them ideal for restoring baby teeth in the back of the mouth.  They are cost-effective and provide excellent protection for the tooth.

White Colored Crowns: also known as tooth-colored crowns or composite crowns are used to restore the front baby teeth when the cavity is too large for a filling.

Pulpotomies

A pulpotomy is a dental procedure that involves the removal of infected or damaged nerve tissue while preserving the healthy portions. This procedure allows for the baby tooth to be preserved when large cavities reach the pulp of the tooth.

Extractions

A tooth could need to be extracted due to severe decay, crowding, infection, or other dental issues.  At Back Mountain Pediatric Dentistry, we are trained to make the process as gentle as possible.

We will also discuss any necessary replacement options, such as space maintainers.

Space Maintainers aka Spacers

These are dental devices that are used to preserve space left by the prematurely lost baby tooth.  When a primary tooth is lost before its permanent tooth is ready to erupt, neighboring teeth can shift into the open space.  This can lead to alignment issues or other complications with the eruption of the permanent teeth.  Spacers prevent these complications by holding the space open until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt.
